A few weeks ago I found myself staring at this cover in a stack of DVDs. I’d never heard of Automation Transfusion before, but thought if it was being called “the best zombie films in decades” by anyone I figured it was worth checking out. I admit it, I fell for the packaging and damn am I kicking myself for that. It’s not the worst zombie film I’ve ever seen, but it’s close. The single saving grace is that it has boobies about 5 minutes in, and yeah, that’s pretty much it. If you decide to subject yourself to this, here are some of the fun things you can expect:

A soundtrack that you will swear is the same song over and over and over again, but be delighted to find out during the credits is actually about 90 different songs all written and performed by the same dude

Zombie attacks from the first few seconds in without any concern for story about how or why or build up or anything

Circular blood splatters, you know the kind you might get if squirting fake blood out of a water bottle. Yeah. Those.

The never before seen device of people showing up in an empty town, with no one for blocks and blocks, just long enough for them to wonder why it’s all vacant, and then getting swarmed by hordes of zombies.

Did I mention no build up or hint where the zombies came from? Right, they are just everywhere all the sudden.

When they do find a survivor they are in a shop, for several minutes alone before a dude jumps out from behind a counter yelling at them asking who they are. What was he asleep the the last 5 minutes while they just explained it all out loud?

And then, that same very coherent shop owner suddenly turns into a blubbering mess who can’t form a sentence because he’s so scared and distraught or something.

Which, by the way, it’s impossible to believe on any level.

Oh and you know how zombies typically aren’t very much in the “thinking” department, like, that’s kinda the whole premise of the genre? Yeah, well in this film the zombies have dead blank faces until someone sees them, and then they snarl like an attack dog before launching at them, reaching inside their chests and pulling out their still beating hearts and then eating those. Yeah.

Did I mention that a zombie rips out someones heart? Because that’s kind of a hard one to swallow.

The zombies also bounce from stumbling mindless corpses to super attack running mode depending on the demeanor of the characters in the scene.

Was there a plot somewhere?

Oh, and also there’s this lake scene where the zombie is clearly a huge Friday the 13th fan.

This is an actual line from one survivor to the other – “shhhh… they can smell us!”

In another brilliant scene, the survivors walk into a room full of dead bodies, they step over them and across them until they get to the middle of the room, at which point, in unison, all the bodies come to life at once. Really.

And when they finally do explain where the zombies came from… oh hell I can’t even bring myself to write that.

And how about the end? Want me to spoil that too? Well to bad, because this ends without an ending – it’s to be continued right at a major scene. Seriously. Cock. Tease.

So, after watching this horrid thing I decided to look around online and try to find out WTF these people were thinking and I found a bunch of articles about it being painfully low budget and brand new directors and actors and everything which kinda made me feel bad about hating it so much. But then I thought about it it doesn’t take cash to have an original idea. It doesn’t take experience to make something engaging. And this isn’t being marketed as some n00bs first time shot, it’s being marketed as the end all be all of zombie films which can only leave a viewer disappointed. It’s really a horrible, terrible, piece of crap film. I’m sure they tried real hard and all, but it wasn’t enough.

I wanted to like Dance of the Dead. Honestly I did. Come on, it’s a zombie movie with “of the dead” in the title and after Fido my hopes that people are going to do cool things with the gener has been restored in full faith even with giant hunks of crap the remake of Day actually getting made. But that’s beside the point, what I’m saying is that I went into it with hope. And that might have been where I went wrong. I have many friends who liked it so that’s what I had in my head when I started watching it.

If I’m watching a zombie movie and I need to refill my drink and I don’t bother to put the movie on pause, that’s a problem. If while watching it I start wondering if I’ve gotten any interesting emails, that’s a problem. If during the major ‘fight for their lives’ scenes I get distracted by 4chan, this is a problem. All of those happened. The thing is I just couldn’t get interested and everytime I tried I found myself more bored and annoyed then I had been previously.

I watched it last night, and after sleeping on it I think my biggest problem is that the zombie aspect of this movie is a widget. They could easily take the exact same script and change all the “zombie” references to “vampires” or “warewolves” or fucking “mummies” for that matter and it wouldn’t make that much of a difference. When you have a zombie walking around holding his decapitated head out so that he can lead his body in the right direction, it’s pretty clear you don’t give a crap about zombies and are just using a random default ghost movie device for your scene.

Maybe I’m being too much of a purist, which is saying a lot for someone who isn’t bothered by running zombies, but I think if this had been called High sGhoul Prom or Prom Bite and the monster of choice hadn’t been a zombie I would have at least been amused. But pulling of the Dead into your title I think at least puts some obligation on you to either try to add something to the genre or blatently ignore it and try to cash in and suffer the consequences of the fans. I don’t think this film did either, mostly I think they just didn’t get it.

I heard such horrible things about Diary of the Dead that I was afraid to watch it. Really. People had me scared. I’ve actually had the film in my possession for a few months now but because of all the crao I head I was afraid to watch it. As you might know I dig the zombies and am especially fond of anything Romero touches so hearing such reports from so many folks had me worried. Today I finally decided I couldn’t resist any longer and watched it.

Guess what? It’s not that bad. It’s different for sure, but it’s very Romero. The social commentary is front and center, and I can see how people might be quick to write it off as just following the Blair Witch or Cloverfield style [see the trailer] but I think to tell this part of the story that was the best choice. As with other Romero flicks the zombies are just the setting for a much larger discussion but for the first time someone in the film actually says “they are us” pointing out the crux of the struggle has never been how do we deal with this outside menace but rather how do we deal with ourselves. I thought the conflict of the people who were filming everything trying to decide what was more important, helping out in a single instance or documenting it for the future was very well thought out.

At the same time I can see why people who were looking for something like the remake of Dawn of the Dead or 28 Days Later might be disappointed, though I was amused with the jokes about dead things not moving fast. This has action, but isn’t an action movie. It has gore, but isn’t a gore fest. It’s definitely the most introspective in the Romero series which could put someone off if they weren’t in the mode for it. That said, I enjoyed it. It’s not my favorite thing he’s done, and it’s not the best zombie flick to come out in the last few years but it’s entertaining, thought provoking and worth watching for sure. That is assuming you like zombie movies, and since you are reading this I’ve gone ahead and made that assumption.

For every little bit of awesome in Fido there is a bit of suck in the new Day of the Dead. Seriously, it sucked so bad it was nearly unwatchable. I found myself saying outloud “you have to be fucking kidding me again and again. It’s one of the worst zombie films ever made. OK, it’s not quite as bad as the Return of the Living Dead series but it’s damn close. You might be thinking this is obvious because it’s a remake and there for destined to suck but then again you might be one of the people who refused to see the new Dawn of the Dead which means you missed out bigtime. I’m sorry but it’s true, if you didn’t see the new Dawn you can’t call yourself a zombie fan. Pack it up and go watch Batman Forever or something. But I’m ranting here. In the same vein as Dawn this is a remake in name alone. With the exception of a few minor story points this is an entirely new movie, and entirely sucky. Look, we can all admit that the original Day was not the best thing Romero ever did but that’s no excuse for the massive piece of crap this turned out to be. Everything about it made me want to claw my own eyes out, and I can only hope that the people making the movie did the same thing because if they were blind that would slightly begin to justify how shitty everything about the movie was. The effect, if you can even call them that, were YouTube quality and calling the young soldier boy “Bud at the beginning actually physically hurt me. But, point is I watched this so you don’t have to. Unless you hate yourself and want to endure needless suffering, then go ahead. Otherwise run in fear.

Let me just say this right out of the gate, Fido fucking ruled. I had no idea what to expect walking into this movie and I haven’t been so plesently surprised in a long time. It’s a totally new twist on the genre set in the technicolor world of the 60’s seemingly following the storyline of Night of The Living Dead but taking place after the zombie war is over and done. It’s a comedy more than a horror movie and and the basic story line is that a company has come to the forefront and figured out a way to domesticate zombies so rather than just killing them, people can use them to do house work and other things that a slightly smarter family dog might be expected to do. Of course it’s never that simple and some of the relationships aren’t what they seem. This film is spot on with every detail and never takes itself too seriously. I could watch it again and again, and probably will. Definitely an awesome addition to the world of zombie movies. A+++ Will do business again!

Zombies. If you are reading this site you should be well aware of the fact that I love the hell out of some zombies. So given that obsession I thought I’d share a few thoughts on some of my recent zombie themed consumptions…

First off I just finished all three hardbound editions of The Walking Dead graphic novels and they turned out to be as awesome as I’d heard they were. I’ve actually been wanting to pick these up for a while but it wasn’t until a gift certificate I got for xmas that I just threw down and grabbed them. These are quick reads as you might expect but the storyline doesn’t suffer from that at all. Like any good zombie story the interactions between the non-zombies is the real focus and theres some top notch storytelling going on here. The one complaint I’d heard was that the artwork made some of the characters hard to tell apart, but honestly I didn’t notice that as a problem. The individual characters are extremely well developed and you understand how and why they react in some situations the way they do and while some of the story lines have been seen before (friendly survivers vs not so friendly ones) the little twists make them still completely enjoyable.

I finally picked up the final chapter in David Wellington’s triology, Monster Planet. I loved the first two books (Monster Island & Monster Nation) and while I’m only halfway through this one it’s a perfect continuation of the story. While the first two books take place almost simultaniously, this one is set 12 years after the fact and picks up right where you’d hope it would. If you haven’t been following the story it’s totally worth picking up the first book and seeing how Wellington takes a new angle to this by telling part of it through the eyes of some of the zombies that managed to maintain some bit of consciousness. With the first two books I could barely put them down and only my current hectic schedule is preventing me from doing the same with this one. I’m kinda sad this is the final piece of the story, but super glad to have this series in my library.

The article finally came out and is worth giving a once over. Here’s the goods:

Horror movie fan Caryn Coleman, who owns a Los Angeles art gallery called Sixspace, recently hosted an exhibition by local artist Chad Robertson that focused on the concept of the zombie in popular culture.

“The public’s fascination with zombies has to do with the fact that zombies represent the regular person more than other typical horror monsters and … zombies reflect the monster within each of us,â€? she said.

“The zombie outbreak we see in films shows us how just one single cause can create a rippling and life-altering effect,” Coleman said. “Take, for instance, post-Katrina in New Orleans. That is a perfect example of a devastating event bringing out the intense need for survival and utter chaos.”
